Assignment 7.1 Generative Tools for Teaching and Learning

 Name of application:

  Runway

Type of learning:
Create- Students can use Runway to generate AI images

Type of learning experience:
Direct purposeful experiences- Students directly use Runway to create AI images for a hands-on experience. This gives them experience with using AI tools rather than just learning about the tools.

Description of my participation:
I was so excited to learn about Runway. I have been interested in AI photo creation for some time now but have never had the opportunity to try it. I could see many uses for this tool in the creative aspects of my job, including creating images for makerspace projects.  I had fun trying different prompts. I had seen previously on a show that images of people could turn out interesting, so I decided to try a celebrity and see what happened.  Here is "Taylor Swift wearing an Eagles football jersey". The eyes are definitely a bit unsettling.

Type of learning:
Evaluate- Although the AI tool is helping to evaluate a student's work, the student has the power to decide if Grammarly is making the best choices and if they should use the suggestions.

Type of learning experience:
Demonstrations- Grammarly demonstrates to students how their writing could be improved. It is then up to the student to decide if they want to use the suggestions.

Description of my participation:
I like to think of myself as proficient in editing and grammar, but this AI tool is still helpful in having "a second set of eyes" to look over my writing. I have heard of Grammarly for years, but this is the first time trying it. I could absolutely see how helpful this could be for students. Not only will it improve the work they submit, but it could also teach them about correct grammar for future assignments.

Name of application:

Type of learning:
Analyze- Diffit allows teachers to take existing material and use AI to formulate questions and topics for discussion. This allows students to examine information in different formats.

Type of learning experience:
Verbal symbols- Diffit uses video and text input to create additional text that can be used to more deeply explore a topic.

Description of my participation:
This is another AI tool I really liked. I tested Diffit by finding a short video on YouTube and submitting it. I chose, "Bloom's Taxonomy In 5 Minutes" and chose 11th grade + for the intended audience. After processing, I was given an adapted reading passage, summary, key vocabulary words, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions, and open-ended prompts. This is a fantastic tool for teachers. I don't teach in a traditional sense, but I'm sure I will find a way to use this resource.
